We had booked a nice B ‘n’ B in a little coastal town called Clifden, which is just a hop and a skip West of Galway, as we thought the location would be a good staging point for a driving holiday in Connemara and maybe The Burren as well.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAfter a half-way stop over at the Porthouse Hotel in Athlone we all piled into the 12 seater van we had hired and aimed ourselves at Galway and the West. I had already had a frustrating morning having missed out on an excellent opportunity for a “misty lake shot with geese” and was really hoping that somewhere along the journey another would present itself. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eUnfortunately nothing really stood out as we traveled along until we got quite close to Clifden. With sun setting and the light rapidly fading Denise (my better half) shouted for us to stop as she had seen a pretty lake to the North of the road we were traveling. We pulled over, piled out, grabbed the camera gear, climbed up an embankment and down to the lake shore on the other side. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI have never seen such still water...such a perfect reflection. There are plenty of times where one plans a shot for days, weeks, months and even years before bringing it to fruition but with the pressure of a fast setting sun and a concern that the perfection would not last, I entered a state of flow, Panorama, Tripod - Ballhead - Camera - Focus - Exposure and the image was captured!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eC‌eltic Reflections is one of my favourite shots to date. The mountains seem to spring up out of the ground with a youthful enthusiasm and walking amongst them is a truly uplifting experience.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe had based ourselves in Queenstown and had already tried our hand at climbing Ben Lomond and had spent a very pleasant day walking in and around Lake Moke, both to the NW of the town. We thought it would be interesting to head up to Lake Alta in the Remarkables Ski Area to see whether the Summer vistas of shattered rock would make for interesting images. As it turned out it was more difficult than I thought to capture such rocky terrain as there is little upon which to base a sense of scale - but that's a story for another day. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs we headed up the switchback from Kawarau Falls a glance back revealed a clearing sky and patchy sunlight illuminating the valley floor below. I set up on the side of the road taking shots as the clouds and light moved and shifted across the landscape. I took several panoramas of this view but this one was by far my favourite. Clearer skies had started to give way to the darker roiling clouds in the distance which were pushing over the tops of the far hills as if trying to toboggan down the slopes and into the lake but yet the foreground remained lit by beams of sunlight cresting the peaks of the Remarkables range to the West. Chief among them was our visit to \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.kylemoreabbey.com\/\" title=\"Letterfrack Sunset taken after our trip to Kylemore Abbey\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eKylemore Abbey\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e so as to walk through the grounds and especially the Victorian walled garden where steam heating had been used to grow bananas, of all things!\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe passed through Letterfrack* on our way from Clifden heading from the road near where this image was taken and then through the notch in the hills in the distance and on to the abbey a few miles further beyond that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEven though we passed along the road during the late morning I could see that there might be an opportunity later in the day to take an image from the vantage point of the hills above the village and planned to take the shot on our way back to Clifden.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith 2 families in tow I couldn't ask them all to stand and wait with me so, much like my \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/outunderthesky.com\/products\/cameo-ireland-galway-claddaghduff-connemara-clouds-morning\" title=\"After Paul Henry Out Under The Sky\"\u003eAfter Paul Henry\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e shot, I got them to drop me at the side of the road while they went off for afternoon tea.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe road was in a bit of a dip in the landscape so I climbed up onto the moorland to the south of the road and struck out for about 750m to a spot where I could take in the entire scene. At this stage, what with the scramble and a somewhat leisurely departure from Kylemore Abbey I arrived on location with not very much daylight left.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs can be seen from the image the sun is very close to setting but what the image lacks in foreground lighting it makes up for with the dramatic clouds enveloping the hills in the distance. This was a very dynamic scene with the final image capturing one moment in a continuously changing interface between the clouds and the hilltops. Given the likely duration of the climb and the fact that we were based in Queenstown we headed off very early one morning to drive over the mountains through Cardrona to Wanaka as this was the most direct route.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs we dropped down out of the mountains to reach the lake level the road straightened out leaving us with a direct view onto the lake from several kilometers away. The still morning was leaving a beautifully reflective surface on the lake and the clouds seemed to drape themselves across the distant hills.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs we got to the main road we found ourselves opposite a pebbly lakeside beach and stopped to take this shot. I set up the camera on the tripod down at the water's edge and took 4 or 5 panoramas. I had heard that there was a great lookout at Mapleton Falls so I was up early (4am) on a morning dictated by absence of cloud cover and headed off in the dark armed with Google Maps and my camera gear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lookout is about a 40 minute drive inland from the coast initially on main roads which very quickly become secondaries until eventually becoming narrow and winding country lanes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen I was within about 2km (1.25miles) from the lookout point, with the sky lit only by a setting moon, I could see, through the trees, what appeared to be a large body of water off to the south of the road. This had me a bit stumped as I couldn't remember any large lakes on the maps I had studied. The partial view of this \"lake\" continued all the way to the lookout where, finally, the truth was revealed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe entire valley floor was covered in a roiling, misty, moonlit inversion layer! As I stood in the still air of the chilly pre-dawn the distant hills were no more than silhouettes against a crisp starlit sky and in the background the only sound I could hear were the falls as they fell to the valley floor some 80m (250ft) below my feet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI set up the tripod and camera and started the process of shot practice to ensure I would have the panorama positions and orientation worked out before I needed to actually take the shot I wanted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the end I took upwards of 20 panoramas of the valley at various stages during the changing light of the sunrise. This shot stands out as my favorite though.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe mist has receded sufficiently to expose the trees in the midground, the approaching clouds in the background had risen up to provide interesting textures in the sky and the sun, just above the horizon and out of shot to the left, is throwing a golden light across the far hills and just nicking the top of the hills to the right.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are 2 smaller details which also stand out for me in this shot - the trees silhouetted against the sky on the right of the image and even more particularly the image of the sun refracting back to the camera off the surface of the mist just off center at the far edge of the valley.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was a fitting end to a magical morning.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Out Under The Sky","offers":[{"title":"Nook","offer_id":42117104926874,"sku":"201704250723N","price":350.0,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":true},{"title":"Feature","offer_id":42117104861338,"sku":"201704250723F","price":1350.0,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":true},{"title":"Mural","offer_id":42117104894106,"sku":"201704250723M","price":5400.0,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0601\/3101\/6858\/files\/Tagged-Panorama-Australia-MapletonFalls-ObiObiValley-InversionLayer-Mists-Morning-ObiObiMists-Product.jpg?v=1688515391"},{"product_id":"panorama-australia-tasmania-freycenet-cape_tourville-dawn","title":"Freycenet Dawn","description":"\u003cp\u003eOur first trip to Tasmania in the 24 years since we arrived in Australia brought us on a whirlwind tour of Hobart and Cradle Mountain eventually depositing us on the East coast of the state near a little town called Freycenet. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe stayed in a really comfortable AirBNB not far from the coast and forayed out from there exploring the surrounds. We were following our noses on one of these excursions, just seeing where we would end up when we took a turn at a sign marked \"lighthouse\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Cape Tourville lighthouse complex features a nicely laid out walking path which takes you on a winding path up to the lighthouse and then around along the cliff edge providing a great view of the Freycenet peninsula and Wineglass Bay. Our wanderings had brought us to the lighthouse in the late afternoon but given the view I resolved to come back early to catch a sunrise from this great vantage point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/photoephemeris.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Photographer's Ephemeris\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eThe Photographer's Ephemeris\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e gave me time and position of sunrise and \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudfreenight.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Cloud Free Night\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eCloud Free Night\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e dictated a trip 2 days later to maximize the chances of an interesting sky. Proximity to the lighthouse meant I had a later than usual start-time and arrived at about 5am to set up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI must have practiced the panorama sweep across the scene 10-15 times taking shots each time as the sun began to light the sky while I waited for the dawn at 05:54. Dawn finally came and the darkness got light but that wonderful illumination was nowhere in sight!*\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnfortunately, dawn had managed to coincide with the arrival of a thick cloud bank on the horizon which turned off the lighting on my scene as effectively as any switch. For a moment I lamented my bad luck but on further examination was that a small gap in those far clouds?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt 06:31, for about 45 seconds, the sun peeked through that distant gap and presented the possibility of the shot you see here...then it was gone and the day's chances were over. I did revisit the lighthouse and \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/outunderthesky.com\/products\/cameo-australia-tasmania-freycenet-cape_tourville-dawn-sunspots-clouds\" title=\"Link to image Agni(Fire) taken at Cape Tourville in Tasmania Australia\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eAgni(Fire)\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e is one of the resultant shots taken a few minutes after the dawn. This shot has a bit more of a chequered story...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFeeling the effects of severe \u003cem\u003edeja vu \u003c\/em\u003e(from 7 years previous)\u003cem\u003e \u003c\/em\u003eI set up the tripod and camera and started practicing the panorama sweep for the shot while I waited for the dawn. I also took an overall, wide angle shot to provide a reference for stitching the panorama later. At about 09:00 I spotted a possible break in the clouds and a hint of blue coming in from the North, an observation which coincided with my finding the bridge from which this shot was taken.   \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI set up the tripod on the bridge at the side of the road and marveled at the wonderful reflection coming, albeit rather dully, off the surface of the water. I felt it was wise to allow a full day for the descent so as to avoid another 'intermediate' camp if it proved to be as difficult as the ascent at the beginning of the trip especially as I didn't fancy another evening spent looking for drinking water!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI traveled the path until it passed Mt Hesperus and then started to look for a suitable campsite so as to minimize my impact. I did eventually find a site but it was during the search for it that I came across this notch between Hesperus (on the right) and the rocky outcrop on the left.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe foreground drops steeply away in this image and the incredible views of the Junction Creek valley depicted here captured my attention for the best part of three hours. I felt like Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk having climbed up into the clouds only to look back and be reminded of where I had come from and what I had endured to get here.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn truth, I was elated as I sat on a flat rock in the sunshine and watch the shadows of the clouds moving in leisurely bands across the valley floor. Far below I could see Scott's Peak Dam on the left and the deceptively peaceful looking forest which had taken me along the valley on that first day as far as Junction Creek. Looking closely I could even see parts of the path to Moraine A highlighted by quartz gravel and over which I had passed before tackling that challenging climb.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, this shot is a memento of a moment of tranquility leading to the realization that turning back was simply a decision and not, as I had originally felt, a failure. This vast canyon stretched out in front of me like the nave of the greatest cathedral and for 30 minutes I could do nothing more than drink in the scene.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eTo give the reader a sense of scale, the vast bulk of Mount Hayes on the left rises up 800m (2600ft) from the valley floor and Mount Sirius (in the background) is more than 4km (2.5miles) away.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAs I knelt there little did I realize that this would be the furthest point of my 2023 expedition as inclement weather and the need for more training with a heavier pack dictated my return to Moraine A two days later.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI remain upbeat however and use this shot as a reminder of all that is to come on the 2025 expedition. I did spot a waterfall coming down the cliffs to the right and a river meandering across the valley floor and decided that these, in combination with the lovely cloud lighting, would form the basis of the shot. I set up my tripod but then decided I needed my longer lens so went back to the camp to get it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was walking back to take the shot when the silhouette of the tripod against the background jumped out at me as an icon of what it feels like to be a landscape photographer and that was the genesis of this shot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI attached the longer lens to the camera and stood watching the lowering light - waiting for the right combination of elevation of the sun and rotation of the earth so that I could simultaneously get the right light on the waterfall and the bends in the river.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made 8 passes at this image in the ever changing light but this shot came from a moment when the sun had settled in the sky so that the shadows of the trees on the valley floor were elongating towards me. I had decided to take a shortcut on the C135 and as I traveled NE out of the village of Wilmot I spotted a lookout platform by the side of the road which presented a fantastic view of the Forth river valley with Mount Roland beyond.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe mountain was illuminated so as to provide some decent contrast on its crags and the river below was performing its own contrast routine against the surrounding trees.
